ASTM F1958 outlines the withdrawn test method for evaluating the flame resistance and heat transmission of flame-resistant materials used in protective clothing when exposed to simulated flash fire conditions.
Please note: This test method has been withdrawn with no direct replacement.
While F1958 was withdrawn with no direct replacement, the concepts it addressed regarding ignitability are indirectly covered or assumed in F1959. For a material to be arc-rated under F1959, it must first be flame-resistant (e.g., meeting ASTM D6413, which specifies requirements for char length and afterflame). If a material ignites and continues to burn, it wouldn’t be able to achieve an arc rating under F1959
